We’re retiring AdSense Referrals

We’re constantly looking for ways to improve AdSense by developing and supporting features which drive the best monetization results for our publishers. Sometimes, this requires retiring existing features so we can focus our efforts on the ones that will be most effective in the long term. For this reason, we will be retiring the AdSense Referrals program during the last week of August. We appreciate your patience during this transition and here are some alternative options to consider:Google Affiliate Network: As part of the integration of DoubleClick, the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate Network will now operate as the Google Affiliate Network for advertisers targeting users located in the United States. Similar to the AdSense Referrals program, the Google Affiliate Network enables publishers to apply for advertiser programs and get paid based on advertiser-defined actions instead of clicks or impressions. For further details, please visit: http://www.google.com/ads/affiliatenetwork/.AdSense for content ads: If you have less than three AdSense for content ad units on a page, you may wish to replace the referral ad units with standard AdSense for content ad units. If you currently use referral ads, either to promote Google products or offerings from AdWords advertisers, AdSense Referrals code will no longer display ads beginning the last week of August. We encourage you to take the following steps before the product is retired:Remove the referral code from your site(s): Please take a moment to remove all referral code from your sites before the last week of August, so you can continue to effectively monetize your ad space.Run and save all referrals reports on your desktop: Create and save all reports related to the referrals program on your desktop, so you continue to have access to your valuable campaign information.Thank you for your support of AdSense Referrals in the past. Easiest CPA Offers to Convert

cpa offers that convertMany people have a type of websites which hardly converts with affiliate networks. Such sites includes (but not limited to) wallpaper sites, celebrity gossip sites, lyrics, freebies etc. Most of these people run Adsense as their only advertising network. Then they look for other networks like ValueClickMedia and CasaleMedia to run some CPM and CPC based banners.

But such sites are not always accepted in such networks. So what are your options? Can you run affiliate programs on your website? Can they convert? Well, mostly the answer is no. The reason behind this is that, when a person is visiting such websites, he or she is not at all in a buying mood. He is just sort of having free time, which he/she is enjoying online.

But, there are few affiliate programs which is actually targeted for these type of people. They don’t ask people to buy anything. They promise to give people something free. Which people in such mindset like to opt for.

So what are such offers?
There are many offers like this being run by affiliate networks. For example NeverBlueAds offers many such offers. Here are few examples:

Nike or Adidas - $500 Shopping Gift Card Free
Free $500 Gap Gift Card
Consumer Gift Cards - $250 in Marshalls Gift Cards Free
$500 Gas Card Free

Any many more (at-least 20 more) other similar programs. What these program need is that the user submit their email address or ZIP code into the form. There is only one field in that form. So there offers are quite easy to convert and they convert on almost all types of sites. The main reason behind it is that they offer something as “free” which people surfing such sites would love in that mindset.

These offers are called “Zip Code Offers” or “Email Only Offers.” They mostly pay around $1.20 per email entered or ZIP code entered.

So go ahead and run these offers on your such websites and see how they perform. I am sure you will make some extra money to your Adsense ads, as these offers are very easy to conver. Please note that these offers are not good for website which don’t have much of US traffic. They are mostly good for US traffic only.

Advertising with Griz

Advertising Rates and InformationI have a steady stream of people and businesses asking to advertise on this blog. To this end I have run several tests in order to gauge my readership and my search traffic so that I can set a fair value for your ads and glean information as to what type of ads will garner the best results. At present I will not be posting ads above the fold. The reason is simple - I make a good income off of my Adsense ads and if I was to place ads in competition with Adsense I could potentially lose a good number of clicks. This would be fine but I don’t believe anyone will be willing to pay $50 - $100 per day for their ad in order to offset my losses. If you want to place a banner ad then be aware that they will only be placed below the posts. This is not a great spot and you will only average a few clicks daily. If interested the banner must be 468 x 60 and the cost is $20 per month. The Banner is site wide and not just page specific.By and large I have found that text link ads have produced the best results and will be located in the “Sponsored Links” section just below the fold. My tests have shown that you can expect 10-30 clicks per day for most links. Those links that are focused on the “Make Money Online” niche, “SEO” and software products tend to do better than those with a more generic focus. If your text is catchy you can potentially drive over 100 clicks daily. The cost is $45 per month. You have 32 characters (inc. spaces) to use for your link.If you wish to advertise a content link within a particular post that is relevant to your product please contact me and we can discuss this on an individual basis. Some pages (topics) draw a large number of daily visitors while others do not so the rates will vary. All Advertising on this site will have a no-follow tag attached. I am not selling PR - just traffic. Please do not contact me if you are looking for do-follow links. How my Traffic breaks down. Many of you will notice I have a decent readership of over a thousand subscribers. Be warned that this is not the type of traffic that will be buying your products. If you are looking for readers to your blog then they are ideal. Just don’t expect them to convert into sales. My readers make up about 1/4 of my total traffic. The bulk of my daily traffic comes from the search engines with the great majority sent by Google. This blog currently ranks on page 1 for more than 50 “Make Money Online” keywords as well as dozens of other terms that I have targeted related to Internet Marketing and SEO. In my opinion this is the traffic you should be targeting your ads for as it is the type of traffic that will produce sales. My tests have shown an average 3% conversion rate for affiliate products listed in the “sponsored links” section and a 26% conversion rate for lead generation links (collecting email lists and sign up programs.) Your success will vary of course and will depend on the keywords you use and the type of product or site you choose to list.It is not my intention to just take your money. The rate is for the month but if you find that your ad is not pulling traffic then feel free to make changes to the text or change the link altogether to target a different site or product. You are buying a spot and are free to play with it as much as you like. I have not set a cap as of yet but will decide how many ads will be listed once I determine the best ratio of ads vs. clicks. If the 5th spot generates 10 clicks a day and the 6th spot generates 1 click per day I will limit the ads to only 5 spots. If you are interested in advertising please email me at Grizzly and I will give you my paypal info. I reserve the right to decline any ads that I feel are inappropriate to this blog. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.Cheers,Griz

Ever since I read that Grizzly had doubled his income by eliminating Smart Pricing from his AdSense, I decided it was well worth my while to see if I had been smart priced too.

In case you don’t know, AdSense’s Smart Pricing is when AdSense reduces the price it pays you per click, based on some not totally understood method which takes into account how well your site’s traffic converts for the advertiser. Some people think it is based on click-through-rate (CTR), but this is not true.

About This Blog

I never set out to create a social blog - for the most obvious reasons; it doesn’t provide the kind of traffic that pays and I am using Blogger and not a fancy looking wordpress theme to demonstrate that absolutely anyone can build blogs for free and make money online. If I can turn a plain ugly Blogger blog into a money maker then so can you. This blog isn’t trying to develop a readership ala the “A List” in order to make money selling ad space to other Bloggers. This blog is a working demonstration of how I create free blogs, optimize them for the Google - called search engine optimization or SEO but should really be called Google Optimization as they are the only engine that counts - and then develop the kind of backlinks that count. This blog - ugly as it is, ranks really well for a lot of very competitive keywords - that is how you get organic traffic and organic traffic will click on Adsense and they will buy product. Organic traffic doesn’t consist of just bloggers - it consists of everyday people who don’t know and don’t care what an affiliate link is. If you want to be the next “A Lister” then this blog isn’t for you. If you want to know how I create blogs that just make you money (but no fame) then please read through the archives.Ironically I seem to have developed a steady readership in spite of myself and the readers put up with the ugly Adsense set up I use. This has made this blog interesting to say the least - I’m trying to make money with Adsense while trying to post something that is actually useful. When was the last time you were on an Adsense site and found anything useful? Long story short - I have met a lot of great people because of this blog and I never have the time to get around and thank everyone for their support. Many have written very kind things about this blog on their own sites and as a thank you I want to publish some of the blogs from time to time. To that end I have added a “What My Readers Think” section below the post and hope to give them some luv back.

Game on for GameScene

Back in 1995, Gary Rosenzweig published some of the world’s first web-based games. Some of his early games as well as more than 100 created by CleverMedia, the company he later founded, are available at GameScene.com.”Even in those early days, it was clear to us that web advertising was the best way to earn money from our content,” says Gary. Revenue from ads offered him creative and financial freedom to be both a game developer and publisher. But the early ad banner market was volatile and fluctuated constantly. It wasn’t until he joined the AdSense program in August 2003 that Gary was able to get consistent high-level performance from advertising.”AdSense not only performs better than banner ads, but is also much better for site visitors,” Gary notes. “The text ads and high-quality display ads used by Google were a far better experience than the pop-ups, pop-unders and interstitial ads still used today by our competitors.”At GameScene.com, CleverMedia uses 160×600 wide skyscrapers next to the games, and 300×250 medium rectangles on instructions pages. Gary encourages other publishers to test different ad formats and placements on their own sites, especially as their users grow and change. Having non-obtrusive but relevant advertising on high-traffic pages provides the revenue CleverMedia needs to keep making innovative web games.Have your own success story to share? 6 Ways to Make Money Using YouTube

youtube.jpgYouTube is probably one of the most popular services online. But, how do you incorporate its use in helping you to make money online?

1. Add Premium Partners’ Videos on Your Blog or Site. If you have an Adsense account, log in and get the code for ‘video units’. You can create a YouTube Video Player and customise it according to various categories, key words, and content providers.

2. Run affiliate ads on YouTube videos. Chris on Making Money Scoop has some tips on how to do this using various tools.

3. Provide regular quality video content. Perhaps, you can become a ‘premium’ publisher and Google will split ad revenues with you.

4. Start a video blog or site that features various YouTube content. These blogs and sites can be anything from cute animal videos to craft tutorials. Then, run relevant ads and affiliate programmes on your blog or site.

5. Accept direct ads on your YouTube content. If you upload your own videos on a regular basis and you have a decent following, you might want to accept ads on your videos.

6. Enrich your sales using YouTube videos. If you sell an item on an online shop and you are able to compliment your listings with YouTube videos, then it will be useful. Also, you can link to your sales page on your YouTube. This might help bring video viewers to visit your sales page.

So, do you use YouTube at all in your online business? Can you think of other ways to use YouTube videos to help you to make money online?

Speaking the language of small businesses

Following our recent testimony in front of the U.S. House Small Business Committee, we revisited Washington D.C. to deliver our first seminar for small businesses on the web — specifically those in the Hispanic-American community. The Spanish-language seminar, co-sponsored by both the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the League of United Latin American Citizens, focused on making the most of AdSense and other Google tools to effectively and efficiently manage a small business online. We know a number of our publishers are Hispanic small business owners, so we’d like to share the video of the event with you (in Spanish with introductory words in English): If you’re a small business owner, we also recommend taking a look at our small business resource page, available in both Spanish and English.Posted by Carolina Shea - AdSense Publisher Support

In-Text Advertising with MediaText

Never put all your eggs in one basket. John has stated time and time again that you should look into as many different monetization methods for your blog as possible.. If you rely solely on Google AdSense, you could be leaving a fair bit of money on table. You could look into affiliate programs, sponsored reviews (like this one), and ad banners, for example.

Another way that you can make money from your blog is through in-text advertising, like the solution offered by MediaText. The concept behind MediaText is going to sound like a familiar one for those who are regular readers of John Chow dot Com.

How Does MediaText Work?

Unlike other ad networks that take up valuable real estate on your blog, MediaText is an in-text advertising solution. What this means is that you do not need to dedicate a section for ad banners or anything like that. Instead, the pre-existing content on your blog can be converted into advertising. Certain keywords in the text will become hyperlinked and the sponsored links are double-underlined in green to differentiate them from regular hyperlinks.

When a site visitor hovers his or her mouse pointer over the sponsored link, a small window pops up that displays the actual ad itself. If the visitor chooses to click on this link, the publisher (that’s you) gets paid. It is not clear whether clicks through the MediaText ad network are based on a bid system or if they are a set rate.

You might find that the mechanism and appearance of MediaText is familiar. Yes, it’s pretty much the same as one of John’s recommended moneymakers. I’ll let you figure out which one.

Qualifications and Requirements

To sign up as a publisher with MediaText, you will need to fill out a three-part application form. The first part asks for basic contact information, like your phone number and email address. The second part asks for your mailing address and preferred payment method. Payment can be arranged by cheque, bank wire, PayPal, ePassporte, and StormPay. The minimum payout level is $25, though you can set the threshold as high as $5,000 if you prefer.

The third and final section asks for your website name, URL, and description. It also asks for the number of page views you get each month. From what I can gather, there are no minimum traffic requirements. I tried to register using my fighting games blog, which gets minimal traffic, and the account was still approved within 24 hours.

Three Ways to Get Paid

MediaText boasts that it offers 3 ways to earn additional revenue. The first is the in-text advertising solution described above. The second provides a paid text link that can be inserted anywhere on your site. The formatting of this second method, called VisioMedia, is identical to the standard in-text advertising.

To implement either of these money-making strategies, you need only insert a small piece a code below the tag on your website. At default, the MediaText ads will be served throughout your content. To define where you would like the ads to appear, you can either insert code for inclusion or exclusion.

The third and final way to make money with MediaText is through their referral program. Publishers automatically earn 5% of all revenue earned by publishers that they refer to the program.

Setting Parameters, Checking Stats

The in-text advertising served by MediaText is not contextual. Instead, the ads are determined by the category you choose to describe your website. There are 15 categories in all, including automotive, education, finance, shopping, and travel. You set the initial category during the registration process, but this can be adjusted through the control panel as well. It is also here, under the “Group Tag” section, that you set the maximum number of ads per page, whether ads open in a new window, and so on.

To access stats, you use the widget located near the top of the control panel sidebar. Information is updated every hour and gives you the number of page views, ad impressions, ad clicks, ad click-thru rate, impression percentage, and revenue. It is also through this widget that you can track your referral income as well.

What Makes MediaText Different?

Realistically, MediaText is not all that different than some of the other in-text advertising solutions out there. The VisioMedia option is a nice inclusion, because it means that you can quickly and easily deploy a text ad in a sidebar or footer. Perhaps the biggest appeal to MediaText, at least for now, is that they are currently offering a lucrative introductory offer wherein you can earn a 100% revenue share for the first three months. The caveat is that you need 5 million monthly page views to qualify.

Blinkweb

Blinkweb Website Design SoftwareI have been showing you one of my step by step methods for making money online. In this case I have detailed a process I use to either sell affiliate products or generate leads to sell to others. You can read the first two posts here: Blinkweb Tutorial Part 1 and Blinkweb Tutorial Part 2. So far I have discussed finding a product, service or someone in need of leads and how to create a quick blog properly optimized for the niche. This system is designed for new products or anything that has little competition - ie. a product that has no affiliates (Leads). The basic concept is simple. All newly released products have no authority sites ranking for the keyword in the serp’s. If you are quick, use properly SEO’d blogs and can generate proper backlinks (meaning keyword optimized anchor links) then you should be able to make page 1 of the serp’s for the product and do it quickly. I also mentioned that you shouldn’t just settle for 1 of the top 10 positions on the page 1 listings. This is really the key to how I make money with affiliate products and generating leads - I usually occupy several spots on the page 1 serp listings. This dramatically increases your traffic and an increase in traffic means an increase in sales.I chose Blinkweb, a new software program by Brad and Matt Callen in order to show you my system promoting a product that is likely to have a lot of competition. Brad Callen is well known in Internet Marketing circles primarily because of the success of two previous products; SEO Elite and Keyword Elite - both now considered standard issue for any serious marketer. The point being that if I can dominate this product then you will see how effective this can be with less competitive products and especially for generating leads.I want to use this post to simply update those of you following this tutorial on my progress. The following screenshots will show you my rankings in the serp’s for all the main keywords associated with Blinkweb. Remember I said the key is to occupy as many of the page 1 spots as you can…Keep in mind that the serp’s are still pretty fluid and are changing constantly so results may have changed at the time you read this and depending on your data center. However it is a good sign when you see your site or sites all bouncing on and off page 1. All highighted entries in the following images either directly or indirectly lead the reader back to my Blinkweb Blog. (Click all images to enlarge)Here is the current rankings for the term Blinkweb3 out of 10 spots. Here is the current rankings for the term Blinkweb Review3 out of 10 spots. Here is the current rankings for the term Blinkweb News3 out of 10 spots. Here is the current rankings for the term Blinkweb Demo5 out of 10 spots. And finally the current rankings for the term Blinkweb VideoAgain, 5 out of 10 spots. As you can see I have managed to put my blog in a position to gather a lot more traffic than my competition. While I will continue to get better placement it should be noted that while position 1 is always best you can still pick up a lot of traffic with affiliate products even ranked lower down the page. Unlike people who search for “car rentals” and just click the top listing, people searching for information about a product - especially a new IM product tend to read several listings and not just the first one they see. I apologize for boring my regular readers with this tutorial but I have received numerous emails and comments asking me to show you how I approach affiliate marketing. I have now shown you. I don’t know if there will be an opportunity to make money with Blinkweb as the information we have so far is that the program is to be free. However these “free” programs usually have a not so free aspect to them and if it does I will be in position to collect affiliate sign ups and commissions for a brand new product that is likely to generate a lot of interest. If it turns out to be a dud - big deal - I’m out a couple of hours work in the short term but long term I will have another indexed blog with decent PR. Remember the Asia’h Epperson demonstration? In the short term that experiment didn’t pan out - I couldn’t get decent Adsense ads with it and the star attraction got voted off the show early on. Was it a waste of time? Nope - for those of you who haven’t checked the blog is a PR4 these days and serves me for links… The Asia’h blog is only 4 months old for those of you who think it takes a long time to build up a stable of decent PR blogs. If you are interested in the Asia’h experiment you can read about it here; Asia’h Epperson and American Idol - The AftermathThat’s it for this Blinkweb Update. I hope I have shown you just how simple things can be if you do things right. oh BTW… if anyone is interested in a good review of the Blinkweb program check out Frank’s post at OpTempo - Blinkweb Reviewor catch some of Brad Callen’s comments on Steve’s blog Noovy Blinkweb Update from Brad CallenCheers,Griz
