Lessons On Blogging: What Passing Out Flyers Can Teach You

Did you ever think you could learn about how to make money blogging from passing out flyers? Yesterday afternoon I was helping a friend pass out flyers at their appartment complex, and several thoughts came to mind. It’s a ministry they provide where they sponsor events for people in the complex and organize things like parties and dinners for those in the community.

It’s a really great service, and to let people know about the month’s activities, they must manually put out flyers at each of the 35+ buildings. For those who have lived in an apartment before, you can appreciate how much of a workout it would be to trek up and down 150 flights of stairs (so I volunteered to assist).

Along the way, I couldn’t help but draw several parallels to those who are successful in the world of blogging, and hopefully these few insights will help you in your business (and yes, this is an actual flight of stairs I climbed yesterday).

Don’t Retrace Your Steps

I’m always trying to find ways to maximize results and minimize the work involved. As I learned the lay of the land yesterday, I quickly came up with a path where I could minimize the actual number of steps I had to take to get to each door. By glancing over the layout of the buildings, I realized that if I followed more of a serpentine path I could hit all the doors in the quickest time, and subsequently get done with my section quicker.

Immediately I hit the ground running (walking) and set off to get started. It didn’t take me long to realize that this was by far the superior path to take. Instead of just going around the building, or hitting one hallway then just looking for the next one, it dawned on me that having a plan was critical to this important point of not retracing already tracked steps.

It works the same for blogging. Do you find that you spend 90% of your time thinking about design only to go back and change a theme once a “better” one comes along? Do you spend the better part of your energy dreaming about what your blog can become and not actually writing any content? Do reading forum posts, the latest “opportunity of the day” from the gurus, or any other number of things keep you from actually doing the menial and tedious things required to make money with a blog?

If you answered yes, than make today the day to change.

The basics to making money online are pretty straightforward.

Create value, answer questions, and do it in a way that engages a community and develops a relationship with your customers and readers. People buy from people and brands they know. If you’re the brand, make sure they know YOU.

There, you have it. Give me $1000 bucks for my “secret” if you want, but believe it or not, the actual “secret” to making money online is as simple as that phrase in one form or another. It’s how I approach every website I develop or purchase, and it’s a key point to actually making money. It’s not hard, we make it hard.

After I made a couple missteps yesterday and ended up having to go back and retrace steps I had already taken, I realized that we all do this in our online businesses. Once you find a nice theme, stick with it. People won’t care if it’s 2 or 3-column, they just want good content or answers to their questions. Once you’ve learned the basics to Wordpress, installed a theme/plugins, and done a few tweaks to make it more SEO friendly and to your liking, LEAVE IT ALONE. Start writing content and link building (the two most important factors to building a blog you can actually make money with). Don’t retrace your steps. Move forward.

There’s Actual People On The Other Side Of The Door (or Computer)

After hitting about 20 residences, my entrepreneur mind started kicking in…

‘If I owned this complex, I would have roughly X people paying me $X per month, and heck, everyone needs a place to live. Then, if I…”

I was taken aback by the sheer numbers. Every one of the 100 or so doors I visited was a REAL person paying REAL money to live in this complex. Furthermore, they spend money on groceries, going out to dinner/movies, telling their friends about this great deal they got on a new piece of furniture, and all these things that someone in some industry was making money from.

Immediately, I began to consider how each one of these people could become part of my business, a customer of MINE, someone I could be providing a service too and getting paid in return (after all, that’s the point of this whole thing anyway, getting revenue in return for a product or service you provide).

Now all this is well and fine, and I challenge each of you to always be thinking of ways to find new customers for your blog or website, but I used the heading I did for an even more important reason.

To GET these customers, someone working for that complex had to put out a sign, place a radio spot, or do any number of things to attract them to the sales office. Once there, a salesperson had to give them a tour, answer questions, follow up with them if necessary (still with no guarantee of getting anything in return). It’s all unpaid, pay it forward type work that is focused on getting the person signed up to become a tennant.

Your blog or website is the exact same. No one is going to pay you to buy that domain, get a hosting account, put a website together, write content, or answer customers questions. You do it because you have the end result in mind. You WANT to be home with your kids. You WANT to be able to work from home and make you own hours. You want, want, want. In order to get that desire in return, you have to do the prerequisites that DON’T give you anything back (just yet).

One of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis, and in his book The Weight Of Glory, he said a line that can be easily adopted here:

The only people who achieve much are those who want knowledge so badly that they seek it while the conditions are still unfavorable.

Isn’t that the truth? I love how simple and powerful that sentence is.

To GET customers, you must toil while the “conditions are still unfavorable.” To actually KEEP these people as your customers, you must remember they are real people on the other end of the computer and not just numbers in a tracking software. I’ll check my stats sometimes, see the number of visitors that came to one of my sites, and almost immediately they seem to be more binary code and numbers than actual people.

If you want to be successful online, you must remember and treat your customers/readers as the real people they are. People with fears, apprehensions, questions, opinions, judgements, all of it.

It’s your job to establish the relationship with them so they know you have their interest ahead of your own. They want to know you connect with them, their problem, or their need. Once you establish that dynamic, and mean it…you’re as good as gold. Don’t try to fake it though. People can just as easily see impersonations of the real thing. We all have that voice in the back of our head. Genuinely care about the needs and wants of your customers or readers, it’s the best business to build.

Catching Eyeballs: 5 Steps To Transforming Visitors To Loyal Subscribers

This is a guest post by Chetan Chauhan.

We, bloggers, are normally so busy writing articles and finding new traffic sources for our blogs that we forget that we already have some traffic coming to our blogs. And these visitors should be treated well so that they subscribe to our blogs.

Over 90% of bloggers find it difficult to increase their blog readers just because they don’t concentrate on converting their visitors to subscribers. So I formulated a 5 step plan that shows how to convert your visitors into readers.

#1 Attention: Draw Their Attention To Where You Want

The moment a visitors arrives, his attention should be drawn to your articles’ Titles. Its the articles that would make them your subscribers, not some Adsense or other type of advertisements.

#2 Interest: Show Them You Can Solve Their Problems

The visitor would only subscribe if you are able to clearly show how you can help him/her. This can be done in the following ways:

Focus On Benefits, Not Features: In the article Titles don’t stress on features or the information, but the benefits. More people would read your article if it’s Title shows how the article can benefit him/her.
Keep Them Glued To Your Articles: Long paragraphs look really boring, so keep them short. Enlist the benefits or information since lists are far more easy to read than paragraphs. Also, don’t forget to use Bold and Heading tags wherever necessary.

#3 Navigation: Give Them A Reason To Stay On Your Blog

You should make sure that your visitors find what they are really looking for. The navigation structure of your blog should be user friendly. Make sure all your popular posts are easily visible to the visitors. This would give him more helpful information and thus a reason to stay on your own blog.

#4 Trust: Make Them Understand You Are Behind The Blog

Trust is another factor that would give your visitor a reason to subscribe to your blog. In order to gain his/her trust, make sure you have an About page or an About widget on your blog, preferably with a photo of yours. Knowing that the blog is run by a living person and not by some script, he/she is more likely to subscribe.

#5 Action: Tell Them How To Subscribe, Simple

The last step, give your visitors easy options to subscribe. Remind them that they can easily subscribe to the future updates of your blog. Try to include subscriptions options right below the articles so that they see it every time they visit any of your article pages.

Also, don’t just put a link saying “Subscribe To RSS”. Many visitors might not know what is RSS. Instead, try something like “Subscribe To Our Future Updates” or “Get Future Posts Free”.

Bonus Tip

To summarize all this, don’t make your blog for search engines or for advertisements. Make your blog for your visitors. Trust is what would make them subscribe to you and, probably, buy from you. And trust is gained by giving your visitors what they want, by truly

Sunsetting video units feature

As you may know, we frequently review our products and features to ensure their effectiveness. After reviewing our AdSense video units feature, which allows you to show YouTube content and ads on your pages, we’ve found that it hasn’t had the impact we had hoped for. As a result, we’ve decided to retire this feature at the end of April so we can focus our resources on other opportunities to help publishers earn from their sites. If you’d still like to display video content from YouTube, you can do so through YouTube.com directly. Visit any specific video page and look for the code in the ‘Embed’ box, or sign in to your YouTube account to create a playlist. In addition, please note that this change won’t affect the availability of other video-related ads options — video ads may appear in your AdSense for content ad units if you’ve opted into image ads, and AdSense for video is still accepting applications from eligible publishers who produce video content. Starting today, the option to sign up for video units is no longer available to new publishers. If you’re currently displaying video units, we recommend that you start removing the video unit code from your pages as soon as possible so you can optimize your available ad space in advance. Please be assured that any earnings you’ve generated from video units in the past will still be credited to your AdSense account.Once video units are retired at the end of April, any remaining Leaderboard or Skyscraper video units on your pages will direct users to YouTube.com, while other video unit sizes will automatically be changed to standard embedded YouTube players. These standard video players will display top YouTube videos, but you won’t generate earnings from them once this change occurs. If you have less than three ad units on your page, you may prefer to replace your video unit with a regular ad unit. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to develop our products. Posted by Arlene Lee - Inside AdSense Team

Pageview tracking back to normal

If you’re displaying multiple ad units on your pages, you may have noticed that your pageviews were higher than normal for part of yesterday and today. Our engineers identified a bug which prevented ad units from detecting other units on the same page. As a result, our system logged a pageview for each ad unit that was loaded on a page, instead of a pageview for each page containing ads. In some cases, this also may have caused specific ads to appear in multiple ad units on the same page. Please be assured that ad unit impressions were still logged correctly and ads were still displayed on your pages, so you were properly credited for all earnings generated from your ads. We’ve resolved the issue, and although you won’t see the pageview count in your reports retroactively changed, your pageview tracking is now back to normal. Thanks for your patience and your help in identifying this bug.Posted by Arlene Lee - Inside AdSense Team

AdSense is a-Twitter

Many members of the AdSense team enjoy using Twitter — and we’ve seen that many of our publishers have made it a part of their daily workflow as well. If you’re a Twitter user and have something to say about AdSense, chances are you’ll “tweet” about it. Twitter has given us daily snapshots of what we’re doing right, and what we could be doing better. If there’s an issue affecting many publishers, Twitter is one of the very first places we hear about it. (Not familiar with Twitter? Check out Twitter’s Getting Started Guide.)We’re thrilled to launch @adsense to communicate with AdSense publishers who use Twitter. Our tweets will be a mix of fresh product news, optimization tips, interesting links, upcoming events, and possibly even pictures of our dogs. Our entire AdSense team contributes, so if you have any suggestions for what you want to see, feel free to send an @reply to us!Please note that since we want to make this feed as useful as possible to everyone following us, we can’t respond via Twitter to questions regarding individual AdSense accounts. Please continue to visit the AdSense Help Center and Help Forum to troubleshoot your specific issues.Let the tweeting begin! Posted by Erica dela Cruz - Inside AdSense Team

Answers to your interest-based advertising questions

Two weeks ago, we let you know about the upcoming launch of interest-based advertising. We’ve been reading your blog comments and forum posts, and we’d like to address some of the most common questions we’ve seen:How should I update my privacy policies?Your site’s privacy policy will need to include the information mentioned in this Help Center entry. However, because publisher sites and laws vary by country, we’re not able to provide exact language for your site. Please make any necessary changes to your privacy policies by April 8th, 2009, as the official launch of interest-based advertising will occur on April 9th. If you’re a blogger, you can paste your privacy policy into your sidebar.I noticed some changes in my earnings and the ads showing up on my site — is it because of interest-based ads? No. We haven’t yet launched interest-based ads on AdSense publisher sites, so there’s been no effect on your revenue or the ads appearing on your pages. Interest-based advertising will be rolled out to a limited set of advertisers beginning on April 9th, and then expanded later this year; as a result, the impact of this launch for most publishers won’t be immediate. Over time, as interest-based advertising is rolled-out to additional advertisers, you should begin to see positive effects on your revenue.Does this mean that my sites won’t show ads relevant to my content anymore? No, that’s not the case — interest-based ads won’t replace the previous ad targeting options you’re used to. Interest-based ads will compete in the same ad auction as contextually- and placement-targeted ads, and we’ll continue to show only the ad(s) that will generate highest earnings for you. As noted above, interest-based ads will gradually become available to show on publisher pages, and with more available ads competing in the ad auction, you should see increased earnings over time. Are these interest-based ads pop-ups?No, Google doesn’t show ads as pop-ups. If I opt out of showing ads based on interest categories, can I change my mind later? Will I still need to update my privacy policy now?Yes, you can change your preferences around displaying ads based on interest categories at any time. However, even if you choose to opt out of displaying ads based on interest categories now, you’ll still need to update your privacy policies by April 8th. This is because your site may still show ads based on a user’s previous interactions with an advertiser, such as past visits to that advertiser’s site. Please keep in mind that remaining opted in to displaying ads based on interest categories will help increase the number of available ads for your pages in the long run, which can help increase your earnings potential. Adsense for Domain: Quick Check-in

About a month ago, I mentioned that I was going to test Google Adsense for Domains. Well, I didn’t expect much, as the results of my initial efforts in domain cash parking was pretty dismal. Yes, after trying Sedo and GoDaddy, as well as Chitika for domain cash parking, I was just about ready to give up on the whole concept. But, almost a month in from trying Adsense for Domains, I’m actually pleasantly surprised to see over $2 worth of income from my single domain on that service.

Okay, granted $2 isn’t much. But, considering I’ve received nothing for my previous efforts, I thought this was pretty cool. Besides, for a domain that’s worth approximately $10 a year, if it continues making approximately $2.50 a month, I can end up making $30/year per domain. That’s about $20 profit. Not bad, especially if the domain will be inactive anyway.

In any case, I thought I’ll let you know about it, as I’ve received a few queries about the concept of domain cash parking. I’ll keep you posted for any other developments.

How about you? Have you tried Adsense for Domains yet? How is it working for you?
